TimeSentry has always had a deep connection with Colorado.
I finished the first v0.0.0 version of TimeSentry after pulling an all nighter on a 12-hour layover at the Denver airport back in October.
I was all set to turn my phone off for 10 days and en route to go off the grid and study an experimental meditation technique called Vivation with Paul Hughes in Wyoming for 10 days, but I had set an internal deadline for myself of wanting to ship an initial proof of concept before I got there.
The company had only been incorporated for a month at that point.
So in a way, TimeSentry was born in Denver. It was thus fitting that 5 months later we would join Techstars Boulder to accelerate the business.
We were staying in an Airbnb while here. On the nightstand the host has left a copy of Adam Grant’s “Hidden Potential.” The thesis of the book, according to the jacket sleeve, is that growth is not about the genius you possess but the character you develop. It is that character which allows us to withstand the discomfort inherent in learning. The book is full of anecdotes about the power of perseverance.
It’s been a bit of a theme, to the extent there has been one, of the last year. The trick to being unstoppable is to each day make the decision keep pressing forward in whatever way you can.
Immersive Experiences Change Us
Immersive experiences change us by forcing us into the discomfort of something new. In Vivation teacher training, for example, we experience being held underwater in 108 degree hot springs, breathing through a snorkel while focusing our energy on somatic experiences in a controlled hyperventilation for 20-30 minutes. When we emerge from this experience, it changes how we relate to the fresh air we breathe every day.
As the company's time in program at Techstars comes to a close, I am very grateful for the immersive experience of the accelerator and the way in which it pushed us outside of our comfort zone as a company and immediately into the zone of doing new things.
This week we are pressing forward by refining our Demo Day presentation and coordinating a controlled exit from the active accelerator ecosystem. I look forward to seeing a few of you in Boulder this week to celebrate what we’ve accomplished in this period of time! And I'll be catching up with the rest of you this summer.
